Accessory after the fact
The relentless drive to infantilise women - with, apparently, our eager encouragement - continues with the launch of the Hello Kitty make-up line by MAC. Clearly I am out of step with what modern women want: I find all of this ("über-cute beaded charm bracelets" and "black plastic brush holder in shape of a Hello Kitty head") loathsome. It will go down a storm in Hong Kong.

This has to be a wind up, surely?!?
Yet at the same time, children - girls and boys - are being forced, expected or even desire to forgo childhood and grow up fast. Perhaps this is in order that the victims of that process can recapture some of what they lost. Utterly repulsive.
Sadly it's not a joke. I got this dire news from the enthusiastic but amateurish Hong Kong fashion blog, Butterboom, which gushed "Hello Kitty never looked so glamorous!"
Au contraire - Hello Kitty never looked so suspect.
