Dark age

I just stumbled across a really excellent feature in The Guardian called Fashion for All Ages. It's so nice to see women in their fifties and sixties wearing beautiful clothes and looking great. Isn't it extraordinary that this is such an unusual sight?

I'm not sure when they started doing this - a couple months ago, maybe - but it did register with me that the women weren't all 16 yr old skelfs. It makes such sense.

The Weekend magazine has been using older models on its fashion pages for ages. Age perhaps isn't as great a taboo as weight. Clothes can look good on models of any age, as long as they're thin. But then, age is something we can't avoid, whereas the popular belief is that if we put on weight, we have only ourselves to blame (a view I subscribed to until I had kids, got depressed and ate to fill an emotional hole).

I should have said, ageing is something we can't avoid!

"Skelfs" - what a great word. The incredibly useful Scots Language Centre website defines it here and says, by the by, that it is "used to describe persons of the wee, thin, shilpit variety".

There have been a few bigger models around as well recently, Claire - I did notice that all of the women used in this "At Any Age" feature were skinny, though. "At Any Size" next, I hope.

The barristers I sometimes rabbit on about are in their 50s (I think) and they look fantastic, very well turned out. Then again, they are barristers.

Hello, Peter. Two words: Charlotte Rampling.

Three more words: with a gorilla.

Three more words. In your dreams?

Who told you about those dreams? I actually bid for that gorilla suit on eBay, you know.
