Um meiner Zähren willen

I should thank Anna for finding this, which is beautiful. Tarkovsky used this at the end of The Sacrifice; and I have the Pasolini film Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo to watch when I get back to Hong Kong.

The counter-tenor is Jonathan Peter Kenny and the words in their entirety are as follows:

Erbarme dich, mein Gott,
um meiner Zähren willen!
Schaue hier, Herz und Auge
weint vor dir bitterlich.

Have mercy, my God,
for the sake of my tears!
See here, before you
heart and eyes weep bitterly.

Hei Lottie, no need to thank me, and, well, anyway, you are most welcome - just glad that it has delighted you. A little nervous, now, over the way I went on about the Pasolini - what if you hate it, after all the praise I heaped upon it? But that's always the way, isn't it - we go out on a limb when we recommend a book or a film or a whatever, as these things are always matters of taste cetra yes indeedly.

It is, incidentally, most considerate of you to provide the lyrics here, for when I saw (on my reader) you'd posted the clip, I had to go to an online translation thing for the phrase you'd chosen as the title (my German is so terrible it's practically non-existent). I am wondering what you're referring to with it - obviously, I'm not expecting you to start disembowling your heart here, but hope all is as well as can be for you, in spite of the implied tears, and that your Christmas has been peaceful, joyous and lovely.

x

Thanks, Anna. It was just a line I liked and it seemed to fit with the music.
