Ring of roses

I love the simple pleasure of buying flowers at a flower stall where you can pick your favourites and they meld them together perfectly and wrap them in brown paper. These were made by Tennie, at my favourite flower stall in Stanley market. We were all so pleased with this combination that Tennie's fellow florist took a picture of it too. (Not roses, despite appearances and this post's title: to be maddeningly imprecise, some kind of chrysanthemum (the deep red one), and another flower I can't name (the white one) which always seems to last forever, accompanied by tendrils of something with tiny little white buds.)

They're sublime.

I'm wondering if the white ones are possibly lisianthus?

But I'd never have known that the deep red ones were some kind of chrysanthemum, so it's probably best not to listen to me.

Eureka, greenwords. It is lisianthus. As I've completely made up the chrysanthemum allusion, I think I need help with that one too, if you know it?

I agree with greenwords...the deep red ones look a bit like ranunculus. Definitely not chrysanths (the hateful funeral flowers....where does that come from?)

Magic. Ranunculus it is. Now the real poser for both of you: the green spray with tiny white flowers that you can't really see anyway...

I've drawn a blank at the other flower. Gillian might know?

Can you email me the pics? Mum has done the flowers at church for years, as well as being a lifetime member of Kew, and will almost certainly know. I can ask her to solve the mystery for us.

Ranunculus - one of my favourites. I was thinking there must be some kind of chrysanthemum over there that looked similar, and was a bit perplexed, so am glad to have this solved.

Those smaller white ones, from directly overhead they almost look like white alyssum, but I don't think they put that in bouquets, and it doesn't look as much like alyssum from the sides, so I think it's not that.

Am positive that the lifetime member of Kew will know. (What a contact to have!)

Mum thinks it may be Polianthes Tuberosa but said that without seeing the actual flower it would be impossible to tell for certain.

Plant detective #2 here. I agree that it looks like Polianthes Tuberosa but judging by pictures of PT on Google I don't think it is. It looks a little like cow parsley...it has that softness about it. I suspect it's something we don't have much of in florists here.

LP, does it smell of anything? It looks a bit like lavender too (especially side-on, in the second picture down), or some sort of herb.

It definitely isn't Polianthes tuberosa. It doesn't smell of much. Cow parsley might be right. I could always ask Tennie next time I buy flowers...
